Drowning especially in children is quite common and this is very dangerous as life can be lost in the process, hence the need to learn the necessary steps to take to tackle such.  Drowning is defined as respiratory impairment from being in or under a liquid. A person drowning is unable to shout or call for help, seek attention as they cannot obtain enough air.

Lifeguards and other persons trained in rescue learn to recognize drowning people by watching for these instinctive movements.

Signs For A Drowning Person:

  • A person in the water flailing his or her arms.
  • A person displaying uneven swimming pattern
  • A person lying face down in water
  • Only the head showing and mouth open.

The First Aid Management for Drowning include the following:

  • A drowning person may cling to the rescuer  and try to pull himself out of the water, submerging the rescuer in the process
  • The rescuer is advised to throw in object for the casualty to hold if not trained on how to rescue
  • Once the casualty is out of water, lay the casualty on his back in a slant recovery position this will allow water to leave the system
  • Treat the casualty for hypothermia
  • Get the casualty to hospital for further management

If the victim is in deep or dangerous water but there is a dock to stand on, try reaching with a long object and if the water is too deep or dangerous to enter or if the victims is too far, you can reach with a long object, a throwing assist may also be wise to use.
