The incident occurred on Tuesday at an off-campus hostel called Ezinwanne Lodge, but the deceased, a first-year student of the Department of Building Technology, died on Saturday night, February 6, in a hospital.
The caretaker, whose name could not be ascertained, was caught hitting the student with wood on his stomach. The caretaker had locked up the water supply, according to some of the students in the hostel, because some other students refused to pay the full house rent.

The victim, Anthony Chinweotito was said to have argued that they did not live in the hostel between March 2020 and January 2021, and went on to open the tap to fetch water later.
When the caretaker came back and saw the tap open, he used a Saw to cut the water supply.
This led to an argument where he allegedly picked up the wood and struck the student dead.
Anthony was rushed to a nearby hospital by fellow students, but he was rejected. Later, he was taken to the Owerri Federal Medical Centre, where he died on Saturday.
