Exclusive: Report Claims Buhari Divorced Aisha Before His Death.
A controversial report has surfaced online claiming that Nigeria’s former President, the late Muhammadu Buhari, divorced his wife, Aisha Buhari, before his passing.
According to sources, the erstwhile first lady had, as a result of the divorce, switched back to her maiden name, Aisha Halilu.
Renowned scholar Prof. Farooq Kperogi weighed in on the matter, questioning the authenticity of Aisha’s recent statement where she claimed Buhari asked her to seek forgiveness from Nigerians on his behalf.

“What I do know is that before Buhari’s death, he and Aisha were no longer married. They had divorced, and Aisha reverted to her maiden name, Aisha Halilu,” Kperogi stated.
He further pointed out that Aisha had been noticeably absent from key moments in Buhari’s post-presidency life:
“If you paid close attention, you would notice that Aisha didn’t go to Daura when he retired there. Buhari was alone when he later moved to Kaduna. Even when he fell ill, Aisha reportedly hesitated to travel to London to care for him because she was no longer his wife. She only went in his final days after persuasion.”

Kperogi also expressed skepticism about Aisha’s claim that Buhari instructed her to apologize to Nigerians, asking: “Where and when did this conversation happen?”
Before Buhari’s presidency ended, Aisha had reportedly relocated to Dubai, fueling speculation about their strained relationship. Notably, during the burial in Daura, most condolence visits were received by Buhari’s children rather than Aisha.
Prior to the burial, Aisha had publicly stated that Buhari asked her to seek forgiveness from Nigerians for any wrongs committed during his tenure.

“Ever since he left office, he often told me that if he passed away before me, I should ask Nigerians to forgive him. He acknowledged his humanity—capable of both good and mistakes. That’s why I’m here today, pleading for forgiveness before his final rest,” she was quoted as saying.
However, the alleged divorce remains unconfirmed by Buhari’s family or his former spokesman, Garba Shehu.
