Federal Government Approves Salary Increase for Civil Servants.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved workers’ salary increase across various sectors in the country. This decision, which comes into effect on January 1, 2024, involves a range of salary structures to bolster public service employees’ financial well-being.
According to a statement released by the Head of Press at the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC), Emmanuel Njoku, the approved salary increment ranges between 25% and 35% for civil servants on six consolidated salary structures. These structures include the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS), and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).
Notably, this raise follows previous increases in sectors such as tertiary education and health, where employees under Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS), Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS), Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS), Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS), Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), and Consolidated Health Sector Salary Structure (CONHESS) had already received salary increments.
The government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of civil servants extends beyond the active workforce to retirees. Pensioners under the Defined Benefits Scheme will also benefit from a significant increase in pensions, ranging from 20% to 28%, aligned with the six consolidated salary structures mentioned earlier.
This move aligns with constitutional provisions, particularly Section 173(3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which mandates fair and equitable compensation for civil servants and pensioners.
