A devastating road accident along the Nteje-Awka road, near the New Terminal, Ukpo Junction, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, has left eight people dead and six others injured. Among the deceased were four close friends who were traveling to attend a wedding when tragedy struck.

According to eyewitnesses, the fatal crash occurred on Saturday, April 26, when a speeding petrol tanker collided with a Toyota Hiace bus (registration number EKP375XM) carrying the victims. The impact was so severe that the friends, who were traveling from Mgbuka Obosi to Awka, died instantly.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Anambra Sector Command confirmed the incident, stating that the accident happened around 9 pm on SundayMargaret Onabe, the Sector Public Education Officer, revealed that the Mack tanker involved had no registration number, making investigations more challenging.

FRSC rescue teams from RS5.33 Nteje rushed to the scene, transporting the injured to the hospital while the deceased were taken to Jerusalem Mortuary, Nteje, after being confirmed dead by a doctor.

Friends and family members have taken to social media, particularly Facebook, to mourn the sudden loss. Heartbreaking tributes poured in as loved ones remembered the victims, whose lives were cut short on what should have been a day of celebration.

The FRSC attributed the cause of the accident to reckless speeding, a recurring factor in many fatal crashes across Nigeria.
