Peter Obi Out Of UK Detention.
The Nigerian Federal Government has refuted reports claiming that it intervened in the situation involving Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, who was detained in London, United Kingdom last week due to mistaken identity.
According to Calebthewriter, Obi was detained briefly at Hearthrow Airport in London during his trip to celebrate Easter in the UK.
On Thursday, a fake photo was circulating on social media, showing the executive chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri- Erewa, seated with Obi and a UK law enforcement officer in an office, purporting to show her involvement in securing Obi’s release from detention.
The photo was first shared on Twitter by Adamu Garba, a former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who claimed that Abike Dabiri facilitated Obi’s release, even though everything about Obi was fake. He praised Abike for her alleged involvement in the matter.
He wrote, ” The government of APC aided in the recovery of Peter Obi from his detention cell in the UK, where he was held over allegations of traveling with fake documents. Abike Dabiri played a crucial role in this effort.
” Peter Obi’s campaign, manifesto, motives, and even his travel documents are all fake. Why? “
Bashir Ahmed President Muhammadu Buhari’s aide also tweeted suggesting that the Nigerian government stepped in to help secure the release of Peter Obi from his predicament.
He wrote, “I heard Aunty @Abike Dabiti has helped a fellow Nigerian who needed her assistance in the UK. May God bless her and the services she provides for our fellow countrymen and women, particularly in this recent case, ma’am!”
But the viral photo has been disowned by Abdur-Rahmab Balogun the spokesperson and head of Media, Public Relations, and Protocol Unit of NiDCON who described it as a stint.
According to Balogun, Dabiti-Erewa the NiDCOM boss was not present in the UK and therefore unable to secure the release of any Nigerian who might be undergoing questioning by the UK authorities.
“We have been informed about the social media stunt that has become viral, and we want to make it clear that Aunty Abike Dabiti-Erewa is currently not in the UK and therefore cannot facilitate the release of any Nigerian who is being questioned by UK authorities. We urge the public to ignore this information completely the NiDCOM spokesman stated.
