Last Moments of Brigadier General Uba After ISWAP Ambush that led to his Death.

A senior officer of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Musa Uba, has been killed in an attack by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), security sources confirmed on Tuesday.

The incident is said to have occurred along the Damboa-Biu road in Borno State, a region that has seen continued activity by insurgent groups. According to multiple military sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the general’s movement was tracked and intercepted by the militants.

Brigadier General Uba was a Brigade Commander serving under Operation Hadin Kai, the military’s primary counter-insurgency effort in the North-East. The attack comes just hours after he had taken part in a joint air and ground operation that targeted ISWAP positions. That earlier mission was reported to have been successful, damaging militant camps and causing a number of casualties among their ranks.

It is believed that the ambush was a direct response to that military offensive. Sources familiar with the matter explained that the insurgents used a mix of informants and intercepted communications to trace the commander’s convoy as it returned from the operation.

The attackers are said to have waited along a remote part of the road before opening fire with heavy weapons. The assault overwhelmed the general’s security detail, and his vehicle was directly hit.

A fierce gunfight followed as soldiers attempted to fight back and protect their commander. Unfortunately, efforts to rescue and evacuate Brigadier General Uba were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Backup forces were later dispatched to the area to retrieve his body and secure the location.

As of the time of this report, the Nigerian Army has not released an official public statement regarding the event. However, colleagues within the service have begun to mourn the loss, describing General Uba as a brave and dedicated officer whose leadership was vital to several recent gains in the region.

His death points to a continuing shift in how groups like ISWAP are choosing to fight. They are increasingly focusing on tracking and attacking high-ranking officers, a tactic aimed at hurting military morale and striking back after successful government operations.

Security experts watching the situation say this event shows the insurgents are improving their ability to track military movements. They point to a need for better security protocols for senior officers, including the use of more secure communication methods and varying travel routes in conflict zones.

The killing of Brigadier General Uba has cast a pall over military units in the North-East. For many of his fellow soldiers, his death is a painful moment, but also one that shows the real and ongoing price being paid by those on the front lines. As operations continue in Borno State, the attack stands as a clear reminder of the dangers that remain in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
