Nigeria Police Warns Against Misuse of Uniforms as VDM’s Video Sparks Investigation.

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a firm statement condemning the unauthorized use of police uniforms and accoutrements by content creator Martins Otse, popularly known as “Very Dark Man” (VDM), following a video posted on his social media platforms. The video, which showcases VDM wearing police attire, has drawn public attention and raised concerns about the potential misuse of official symbols by social media influencers and online personalities.

In response to the viral video, the Nigeria Police Force has launched a thorough investigation to determine the origin of the police gear used in the video and to uncover the authority, if any, under which VDM acted. The Force has made it clear that it does not condone this portrayal and disassociates itself from the unauthorized depiction of police officers and their official dress.

According to Nigerian law, the unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements is considered a criminal offense. Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law outline strict penalties for such actions, underscoring the importance of preserving the integrity of law enforcement symbols and preventing potential misuse that could mislead or manipulate the public.

In its statement, the Nigeria Police Force acknowledged the creativity of young Nigerians in the content creation industry, recognizing their contributions to the digital and entertainment space. However, it also emphasized the need for respect and caution regarding symbols of authority, such as police uniforms, which represent the values, professionalism, and trustworthiness of the Force.

The unauthorized use of police uniforms not only violates the law but also undermines public trust in law enforcement. Police attire is intended to be a visual marker of security, discipline, and lawful authority, and any misuse could distort these values and compromise the perceived integrity of the Force.

The Police Force has called on all content creators and social media personalities to refrain from using official uniforms or symbols without the necessary permissions. Unauthorized portrayals, it warned, will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such practices will be held accountable under the law.
