Nigerian Labour Congress Declares Nationwide.
In a move aimed at addressing the growing hardships faced by Nigerians following the removal of fuel subsidy, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a nationwide strike set to commence next Wednesday. The decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) held in Abuja and was communicated by NLC President, Joe Ajero.
The NLC, an organization dedicated to safeguarding the rights and entitlements of Nigerian workers, expressed deep concern over the adverse impact of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s announcement regarding the removal of fuel subsidy in his inaugural speech. Since the announcement, the nation has experienced severe petrol shortages, with filling stations selling fuel at exorbitant prices that are beyond the reach of the average Nigerian.
President Tinubu justified the removal of fuel subsidy by stating that the 2023 budget no longer includes provisions for it, as the government intends to allocate those funds towards infrastructure development and other initiatives to boost the economy. However, the consequences of this decision have resulted in a scarcity of fuel nationwide, leading to prices reaching as high as N500 per litre or even higher
In response to these dire circumstances, Mr. Ajaero has given the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited until Wednesday of next week to revert to the previous price of petrol. Failure to meet this demand will result in an indefinite strike and widespread protests across the country. The NLC President also emphasized that the government had not made provisions for palliatives to alleviate the hardships that would be caused by the removal of fuel subsidy, further justifying the planned industrial action.
The nationwide strike, slated to commence next Wednesday, serves as a collective effort by the NLC to hold the government accountable and seek redress for the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians. The strike will serve as a powerful demonstration of the concerns and grievances of workers and citizens who are grappling with the escalating cost of living and limited access to essential services.
As the strike approaches, all eyes will be on the government’s response to the NLC’s demands. The outcome of this standoff will not only determine the immediate future of fuel prices but will also have broader implications for the relationship between the government and the Nigerian workforce. It is hoped that a resolution can be reached that addresses the concerns of the people while fostering an environment of dialogue and understanding between the government and its citizens.
