This tragic incident is not isolated but rather part of a troubling pattern of police brutality in Nigeria. Over the years, there have been numerous reports of excessive use of force, unlawful killings, and other forms of misconduct by police officers. These incidents have sparked widespread public outcry and protests, such as the #EndSARS movement that gained international attention in 2020. The movement highlighted the abuses committed by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and called for comprehensive police reforms.
Despite the disbandment of SARS, issues of police brutality persist. Citizens continue to face threats and violence from those meant to protect them. The current Inspector General of Police (IGP) has been recognized for his proactive stance in addressing police misconduct. Under his leadership, there have been efforts to hold officers accountable and implement measures aimed at reforming the police force.
The arrest of the officer responsible for Anene’s death is a welcome development, but more needs to be done so innocent citizens don’t lose their lives at the hands of police officers.
