Residents Flee Aba After Killing of Five Soldiers Sparks Fear of Reprisal

Four days after unknown gunmen killed five soldiers at Obikabia Junction in Ogbor Hill, Aba, Abia State, residents are relocating in fear of a military reprisal.

Despite Governor Alex Otti’s assurances during a security meeting with military authorities, urging residents to go about their daily activities without fear, people in the Obikabia area continue to relocate. Others remain fearful of potential arrests by soldiers.

Soldiers have reportedly invaded certain areas, arresting suspects and ordering traders to leave Eziukwu and Ngwa Road markets. Traffic has significantly decreased in the Ogbor Hill area, with roads like Ehere, Umuola, Ukaegbu, Ururuka, New Umuahia, and Obikabia seeing fewer vehicles as residents stay indoors.

However, the Aba main motor park remains busy, particularly around Milverton Avenue, a key area for luxury bus travel to the North and Lagos. Many residents near Obikabia Junction have moved to other areas.

Military checkpoints at Emelogu Junction, Bata Junction, and Asa Road are now deserted. It has been alleged that soldiers humiliated passengers at Aro Ngwa, Umuikaa, Isiala Ngwa, and Ntigha junctions along the Aba–Umuahia section of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway.

A motorist named Sunny reported that while the situation has started to improve, soldiers at Umuikaa Junction still force passengers to raise their hands. He condemned the killing of the soldiers but urged the Army not to punish innocent motorists.

Attempts to contact the Public Relations Officer of the 14 Brigade in Ohafia, Lt. Innocent Omale, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to a text message.
