In a horrifying turn of events, Talatu Salihu, a final year student of Library and Information Science at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), has become the latest victim of terrorism-related kidnapping in Nigeria. Talatu, along with her siblings, was abducted from their residence in Abuja, the country’s capital, leading to her untimely death.

According to sources, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of N100 million for the release of Talatu and her siblings. Tragically, the family was unable to meet this exorbitant demand, resulting in the killing of Talatu by the heartless captors. This distressing incident shows the severity of the ongoing security challenges faced by residents in Abuja.

Talatu’s close friends at BUK confirmed her untimely demise, revealing the sad circumstances surrounding her death. The friend recounted, “She was kidnapped together with two of her siblings in Abuja, and the kidnappers demanded over N100 million for their ransom, which their parents could not afford. They killed her because her family was not able to meet up with the payment of the ransom.”

Disturbingly, the ordeal is far from over for Talatu’s family, as the terrorists continue to hold her brothers captive, threatening to end their lives if the ransom is not paid promptly.

The are concerns over kidnappings and abductions in Abuja, with recent incidents causing fear among the local population. According to Sahara Reporters, an intelligence report from the Nigeria Police Force intercepted communication between kidnappers in Karu, a community near Abuja, and Kabusa area in the Federal Capital Territory. The report indicated plans for a kidnapping operation on January 17, 2024, raising serious concerns about the security architecture in the FCT.

The Nigerian authorities must prioritize the safety of its people, taking decisive actions to dismantle criminal networks responsible for these heinous acts and prevent further loss of life.
