In a shocking incident, an unmarried couple in Indonesia faced public whipping as a form of punishment after being caught kissing. The woman, identified as RO, 23, and the man, known as M, 24, were discovered in an intimate moment inside a parked car, which led to authorities being alerted.

The punishment was carried out at the Bustanul Salatin complex on Sumatra Island, where a crowd gathered to witness the event. Each person received 21 lashes while onlookers watched in horror. Disturbingly, the public whipping took place in broad daylight, and distressing images captured the moment the woman collapsed in pain during the ordeal. The scene was even documented by individuals who took pictures.

After being led separately to a room, the couple faced their brutal punishment. Originally, they were to receive 25 lashes each, but the number was later reduced. Isnawati, the Head of the Criminal Investigation Section of the Banda Aceh Prosecutor’s Office, stated that the couple violated Article 25, paragraph (1) of Qanun Aceh Number 6 of 2014, which pertains to the act of conscientiousness under Islamic criminal law.

According to reports, the couple was discovered in the Ule Lee Harbor area of Banda Aceh City, Sumatra. A police officer noticed a parked car moving suspiciously, prompting an investigation that led to the discovery of the couple kissing.

RO was detained at the Lhoknga prison in Aceh Besar, while M was held in custody at the Kajhu detention centre. It is important to note that Indonesia is predominantly a Muslim country, with approximately 90% of the population practicing Islam. However, the implementation of Islamic law is limited to certain regions. Aceh, under a 2005 autonomy deal with the central government, is the only province where bylaws derived from Sharia can be legally adopted.

In Aceh, the “close proximity” law criminalizes associations between unmarried individuals of the opposite sex under specific circumstances. Public whipping is a commonly used punishment for violating this law. Additionally, lashings can be imposed for offenses such as gambling, adultery, consuming alcohol, and engaging in gay or premarital sex, in accordance with the region’s laws.
