Warri Refinery Begins Operations Amidst High Petrol Prices in Nigeria.
The Warri Refining & Petrochemicals Company (WRPC), situated in Warri, Delta State, has officially resumed production at a capacity of 125,000 barrels per day. This milestone was announced by the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, on Monday.
During his visit to the facility, Kyari emphasized the progress made, stating, “We are taking you through our plant. This plant is running. It is not 100 percent. We are still in the process. Many people think these things are not real. They think real things are not possible in this country. We want you to see that this is real.”

Accompanying Kyari on the tour was the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, among other dignitaries.
Recall that the government of His Excellency President Ahmed Bola Tinubu assured Nigerians that once the country’s refineries became operational, the prices of petrol would become competitive and, ultimately, reduced. This promise offered hope to millions of citizens struggling with the high cost of living.

However, as of now, Nigerians continue to purchase petrol at exorbitant prices ranging between N900 to over N1,000 per liter, depending on the location. This has led to widespread concern and frustration, as the anticipated relief from skyrocketing fuel costs remains elusive. Nonetheless, there is growing optimism that the recent commencement of operations at the Warri Refinery and the reactivation of the Port Harcourt Refinery will finally deliver on the government’s pledge to bring down fuel prices, a feat the Dangote Refinery has yet to achieve.
For many, the focus now shifts to ensuring that these refineries operate efficiently and sustainably, producing sufficient quantities of petrol to meet domestic demand.
