Was VeryDarkMan (VDM) Arrested for Criticizing the Senate President?

Hours after the All Progressives Congress (APC) issued a seven-day ultimatum demanding an apology from social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) over his comments on Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the controversial critic was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at a GTBank location.

The arrest has sparked intense speculation, with many questioning whether it was connected to VDM’s recent clash with Nigeria’s political elite. Just days before his arrest, VDM had criticized Akpabio for traveling to the Vatican for Pope Francis’ funeral, calling it a “misplaced priority” while Nigerians faced rising insecurity. The APC swiftly condemned his remarks and demanded a public apology.

Instead of backing down, VDM doubled down in a viral Instagram video, insisting that ordinary Nigerians—not politicians—deserved apologies. He highlighted the suffering of victims in violence-stricken states like Benue, Jos, and Enugu, where attacks have left many dead or displaced. “If anyone deserves an apology, it’s the people suffering from bad governance, not the leaders,” he declared.

While VDM clarified that he never intended to personally insult Akpabio, he stood by his criticism, stating, “The real insult is how leaders ignore citizens’ plight while jetting abroad for ceremonies.” In a bold move, he even issued his own seven-day ultimatum to the federal government, demanding urgent action on insecurity.

Now, with his sudden arrest, many are questioning the timing. Was VDM detained for alleged financial crimes, as the EFCC claims? Or was it a response to his outspoken criticism of one of Nigeria’s most powerful politicians?

The EFCC has yet to disclose specific charges, leaving room for public debate. Supporters argue that his arrest is politically motivated, while others suggest there may be legitimate legal grounds.

What do you think? Was VeryDarkMan arrested for stepping on toes—or for breaking the law?
