About 4,000 Nigerians Mostly Student Stranded in War-torn Sudan As Peter Obi Calls for More Proactive Measures Be Taken to Rescue Them.
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi has reacted to the reports that thousands of Nigerians are stuck in troubled Sudan due to the dangers posed to air travel in the North African country.
The Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri- Erewa, in a tweet on Friday said “While @nemanigeria and the Nigerian Mission in Sudan have put in place necessary arrangements, any flight now is gravely risky. Airlines on the ground at the airport were all burnt today, there is a curfew in place and no flights can operate. “
Reacting to this, Mr Obi implored the Federal Government of Nigeria to expedite all efforts to rescue about 4000 Nigerians which are mostly students.
The Labour Party Presidential candidate noted that it is the statutory responsibility of the Nigerian government to protect Nigerians at home in Nigeria and abroad, hence, it is important that the government attends to such issues with more deserving proactiveness and commitment as the life of every Nigerian is sacred and important.
In a tweet on Sunday, Mr Obi wrote: ” I’ m sad and concerned by the reports that Nigerians trapped in Sudan have not been evacuated. While we understand the extreme challenges in Sudan, we deeply implore the Federal Government of Nigeria to expedite all efforts to rescue about 4000 Nigerians which are mostly students in Sudan to safety.
“Moreover, as the Sudanese crisis is not a natural disaster that happened suddenly, it will be sad to lose any Nigerian to the conflict, especially now that we need all hands to create and sustain a New Nigeria.
Since it is the statutory responsibility of FGN to protect Nigerians at home in Nigeria and abroad, it is important that we attend to such issues with more deserving proactiveness and commitment as the life of every Nigerian is sacred and important.”
Meanwhile, the chairperson of the Nigerian in Diaspora Commission, Mrs Dabiri-Erewa said that humanitarian groups are making efforts to distribute food, water, and medicals while all efforts are being put in place to get the warring parties to ceasefire.
“our thoughts and prayers are with our citizens there, and the whole country, she said.
One week after fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over 300 people died and at least 3,200 were injured.
