Bobrisky Remains in Ikoyi Prison Amid Transfer Rumors.

Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has debunked circulating rumors that Bobrisky had been moved from Ikoyi custodial center to Kirikiri Prison. Bobrisky, who was sentenced to a six-month prison term for abusing naira notes, remains at the Ikoyi facility, according to NCoS officials.

Reports over the past weekend suggested that Bobrisky had been discreetly transferred to Kirikiri Prison to serve the remainder of his sentence. However, an anonymous NCoS official clarified to journalists on Thursday that there has been no such transfer. “Bobrisky has not been moved; he is still here in Ikoyi. He was not sentenced to death and didn’t receive a life sentence either. Those sentenced to death or given life sentences are usually kept in a maximum prison,” the source explained, emphasizing that the nature of Bobrisky’s offense does not necessitate transfer to a higher security facility.

The correctional service’s policy reserves placements in maximum security prisons primarily for those involved in capital offenses. Since Bobrisky’s conviction pertains only to the abuse of currency, which does not fall under this category, the rationale behind such a transfer lacks foundation.

Furthermore, another NCoS official highlighted that while there are discussions about redistributing inmates across various facilities in Lagos State to alleviate overcrowding, these plans are still in the proposal stage. “Sometimes, we move inmates to decongest facilities. However, those moves are meticulously planned and executed based on various criteria, including health issues, inmate requests for proximity to family, or humanitarian grounds,” the official added.

Concerning Bobrisky’s incarceration, it has been confirmed that he shares a cell with male inmates and was thoroughly examined upon admission. The medical examination concluded that there has been no gender or genital reassignment. According to the prison authorities, Bobrisky has complied with all standard rules and procedures of the facility.

Bobrisky’s legal troubles began when he was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for spraying new naira notes during a movie premiere in Lagos, an act caught and circulated via a viral video. Following his arrest on April 3, 2024, he was swiftly tried and convicted by a Federal High Court in Lagos on April 5, 2024. Although initially facing six counts, including charges of money laundering, Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the four counts related to naira abuse after the latter two charges were dismissed by the prosecution.

Before his sentencing, Bobrisky requested leniency, claiming ignorance of the laws governing currency handling and promising to use his social media platforms to educate his audience on these regulations.

As the situation develops, further updates are expected, particularly concerning any potential inmate transfers that might involve Bobrisky. The Lagos State Command of the NCS has yet to respond to inquiries regarding these recent developments.
