A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment. The ruling was delivered on Tuesday after Kanu was found guilty on all seven counts brought against him by the Federal Government.
Justice Binta Nyako presided over the case, which has been closely watched across the nation. The charges against Kanu were related to terrorism and treasonable felony.
In delivering the sentence, Justice Nyako handed down different prison terms for specific counts. For the most serious terrorism-related charges, the court gave a life sentence. On a separate count, Kanu was sentenced to 20 years in prison, and on another, he received a 5-year term. The judge specified that none of the sentences came with an option of a fine.

A key part of the judgment was the judge’s direction that all sentences are to be served at the same time, a legal arrangement known as running concurrently.

What Concurrent Sentencing Means for Kanu
For the public following the case, the multiple sentences can cause confusion. A legal expert we spoke to explained it in simple terms.
When sentences run concurrently, the prison terms are served simultaneously, not one after the other. This means that Nnamdi Kanu will serve the single longest sentence handed down to him.

In this case, the life imprisonment term is the most severe. The 20-year and 5-year sentences will be absorbed into the life sentence. He will not serve 25 years in addition to the life term.
In effect, the life imprisonment stands as the definitive sentence, and Kanu will remain in prison for life, barring any successful appeal or presidential pardon.
The sentencing brings a new chapter to the long-running legal case involving the IPOB leader, whose calls for a separate Biafran state have been a central issue in Nigerian politics. Supporters of Kanu have condemned the verdict, while the government has stated it reinforces the rule of law.
