Following the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, details have emerged regarding the financial and non-monetary benefits his family will receive from the Federal Government, as mandated by Nigerian law.

Under Section 2 of the Remuneration of Former Presidents and Heads of State (and Other Ancillary Matters) Act, the family of a deceased former Head of State is entitled to several allowances and privileges. These benefits are designed to support the surviving spouse and children while upholding the dignity of the late leader’s legacy.

Monthly and Yearly Financial Benefits

  • Monthly Upkeep Allowance: The surviving spouse will receive ₦350,000 per month, totaling ₦4.2 million annually for personal upkeep.
  • Education and Family Support Allowance: The Federal Government will provide ₦1 million per year, paid in quarterly installments of ₦250,000, to assist with the spouse’s welfare and fund the education of Buhari’s children up to university level.

Additional Benefits for Buhari’s Family

  • Free Healthcare Abroad: The family is entitled to fully funded medical treatment overseas.
  • Annual Vacation: A 30-day vacation, either within or outside Nigeria, will be covered by the government each year.
  • Official Residence: A five-bedroom furnished apartment will be provided at a location of the family’s choice.
  • Telecommunications Support: The government will fund one direct telephone line, covering all associated expenses.

Notably, these benefits are exclusive to the widow and will cease if she remarries.

National Mourning and Public Holiday

In honour of Buhari’s service to Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday, extending the seven-day national mourning period.

A government statement read:
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, in a London clinic, was known for his anti-corruption stance and insistence on accountability in public office.
