Former Deputy Senate President – Ekweremadu Celebrates 62nd Birthday Behind Bars.
Yesterday, May 12, 2024, marked a solemn day for the household of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu as he celebrated his 62nd birthday inside a UK prison. Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, were sentenced on May 5, 2023, for engaging in organ trafficking, with the ex-lawmaker receiving a nine-year and eight-month jail term and his wife receiving a four-year and six-month sentence.
In a decision under the Modern Slavery Act, Ekweremadu, his wife, and their daughter, Sonia, were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to the UK for the purpose of harvesting his kidney.
The jury also found medical doctor Obinna Obeta complicit in the crime following a six-week trial. The allegations stemmed from David Ukpo, a Nigerian boy who claimed that Ekweremadu and his wife sponsored his trip to the UK to harvest his kidney for their ailing daughter, Sonia.
Ekweremadu and his wife were arrested by the Metropolitan Police in the UK and charged before the Uxbridge Magistrate Court on June 23, 2022, for conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.
The court denied them bail and ordered their remand in custody. Ekweremadu’s wife, Beatrice, was released on bail on July 26, 2022, pending the determination of the charge, while Ekweremadu remained in custody. Dr. Obeta was also charged with plotting with the Ekweremadus to traffic a man into the UK to harvest a kidney for their daughter.
Despite being in prison, many of Ekweremadu’s associates are celebrating his birthday, marking a significant day for the former Deputy Senate President.
