Germany’s Arrest Threat Against Netanyahu Escalates Diplomatic Tensions with Israel.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced that Germany would arrest and deport Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if the International Criminal Court (ICC) issues a warrant for his arrest, according to Al Jazeera.
This declaration has provoked a strong reaction from Israel. Avi Hyman, a spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office, told Fox News, “I remember the German leader visiting just days after October 7, calling Hamas the new Nazis and condemning their genocide against Jews. Many need to check their moral compass and stand on the right side of history.”
When asked if Berlin would enforce a potential ICC arrest order, German spokesman Steffen Hebestreit affirmed, “Of course. Yes, we abide by the law,” as reported by the Times of Israel.
Israel’s ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, also criticized the statement, expressing his outrage on X (formerly Twitter). He stated, “This is outrageous! The claim that Israel has the right to self-defense loses credibility if we are hindered from defending ourselves.”

The controversy arose after ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan announced he is seeking arrest warrants for Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and three Hamas leaders. This development has heightened tensions between Israel and the ICC, with Israel accusing the court of bias and overreach.
Germany’s stance, if enacted, would mark a significant shift in its relationship with Israel and could have profound implications for international diplomacy.
