“What was meant to be a vibrant celebration of identity and community turned into a day of terror as members of QueerLibre Naija were violently attacked during an outdoor meet-up at Millennium Park, Abuja. The peaceful gathering was ambushed by unidentified assailants—believed to be either state or non-state actors—leaving several participants injured and emotionally scarred.”

A survivor, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted:

“We were laughing, dancing—finally free to be ourselves. Then they rushed in like we were criminals. Chairs flew, phones were smashed, and people were beaten for simply existing. Some ran into the park’s bushes, others were trapped. No one came to help. The police watched.” He alleged.

Samuel, who suffered a fractured arm while shielding others, stated:

“This wasn’t just an attack on queer bodies. It was a message: ‘We will hunt you.’ But we refuse to disappear.”

The Nigerian government has long opposed LGBTQ+ gatherings, with laws criminalizing same-sex relationships and advocacy. Authorities have yet to comment on the attack.
