Just In: Nigerian President Tinubu Puts a Stop to Continuous School Fees Increment in Federal Universities.

Amid the recent uproar over the exorbitant increase in school fees by universities in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has taken decisive action to address the issue. In response to the hardship caused by the fuel subsidy removal, President Tinubu has ordered all federal universities to halt their arbitrary increase in sundry fees payable.

Dele Alake, the special adviser to the president on communication and strategy, confirmed the president’s directive in a statement on Monday. This move comes as part of the president’s efforts to ease the burden on students in higher institutions of learning.

The University of Jos (UNIJOS) became the latest institution to implement a significant fee hike, raising its fees from N45,000 to N213,000, an increment of over 300 percent. The new fee structure applies to 100 and 200 level students, while those in the 300 level and above will now pay N160,000.

President Tinubu’s primary concern is to ensure that students can access their campuses without facing financial hardships due to higher transportation costs. In line with this goal, the president has also approved the removal of all restrictions on students loans, making them accessible to any student or household in need.

Furthermore, President Tinubu has sternly warned authorities of all federal institutions against arbitrary fee increases. He urges them to avoid any further unwarranted hikes to prevent students and parents from facing additional difficulties.

To support vulnerable students during this challenging time, the government is working on conditional cash transfers and food distribution. The president has also directed the release of over 200,000 Metric Tonnes of grains to families in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

President Tinubu reaffirms his commitment to prioritize education and the needs of students. He aims to improve the welfare of teaching and non-academic staff and invest in infrastructure to enhance the global competitiveness of Nigerian higher learning institutions.
