Katsina Bandits Breach Peace Accord, Attack Makera and Rawul Communities and Burn Farms.
KATSINA STATE – A peace agreement between local leaders and bandits in Katsina State appears to have collapsed after armed groups launched violent attacks on two communities this past Sunday, leaving residents dead and farms destroyed.
The incidents have sparked renewed worry among locals and across Nigeria, with many questioning the government’s strategy for handling the ongoing violence.

The attacks took place on the afternoon of Sunday, November 10, 2025. According to accounts from the area, the armed men first stormed into the Makera community. They opened fire, hitting one person who suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. The assailants then seized six motorcycles from residents and looted other property before moving on.

Their next target was the nearby Rawul community. There, the violence escalated. The bandits killed two people and then set fire to vast areas of crops that were still waiting to be harvested, destroying both the food and the farmland.
What makes these attacks particularly disheartening for residents is that both Makera and Rawul are in the Bakori Local Government Area, where a peace accord was formally reached with bandit groups just a few weeks ago in the town of Kakumi. This agreement was supposed to end such raids.
A community leader, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals, expressed his frustration. “We sat with them and they promised to stop this. Now this has happened. We feel betrayed and we do not know what to believe anymore,” he said.

This latest breach adds to a growing sense that peace deals with bandit groups may not be a reliable solution, as similar agreements in other states have also broken down quickly after being signed.
The continuous violence, which occurs almost daily in parts of northern Nigeria, was a key reason the United States recently designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” regarding religious freedom, often citing the toll on communities in regions like Katsina.
As the attacks persist, pressing questions from citizens and commentators remain unanswered. Despite the frequency of the assaults, arrests of those responsible are rare. This has led many to ask a critical question: who is providing the funds, weapons, and logistics that allow these bandits to operate with such apparent freedom?
