New York Governor Kathy Hochul urged residents to check on vulnerable neighbors, emphasizing that extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related fatalities in the state. As the scorching conditions persist, officials have extended swimming pool hours and opened cooling centers to provide relief.

New York City’s LaGuardia Airport recorded a sweltering 100°F (37.7°C) on Tuesday afternoon—potentially a new daily record—though still below the all-time high of 107°F set in 1966. Meanwhile, Tampa, Florida, shattered its previous record with a blistering 100°F on Sunday.

The heatwave has already caused disruptions, including a power outage that halted several subway lines in NYC during rush hour. Authorities are investigating whether the extreme temperatures played a role.
“This extreme heat is dangerous and can be life-threatening,” warned NYC Emergency Management on X, advising people to “stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible.”
While thunderstorms are expected to bring temporary relief by Thursday, officials continue to stress the importance of staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, and looking out for those most at risk.
