President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honored Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with significant rewards following their victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship. The team received cash gifts, new homes, and national honors in recognition of their outstanding achievement.
At a reception held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu, announced the rewards. Each player on the championship-winning team will be granted a cash reward of $100,000, a new apartment, and the national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

The D’Tigress secured their historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket title by defeating Mali with a final score of 78-64 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. This victory marks Nigeria’s seventh AfroBasket title overall and extends their remarkable unbeaten streak in the tournament to 29 games since 2015.

Vice President Shettima praised the team’s resilience and unifying spirit, stating, “Beyond being ambassadors of this great nation and symbols of excellence, you have once again reminded us of the promise of sports in a nation this diverse.” He added, “This victory is what happens when we walk together.”

The Vice President highlighted the team’s composure under pressure, noting, “My dear daughters, you fought back from behind in the first quarter, not with panic, but with poise. You wore the green and white not just as clothes, but as a symbol of unity—and now you wear the crown as kings of African basketball for the fifth consecutive time.”
