A shadow of concern fell over the celebratory atmosphere of Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s 61st birthday colloquium when he collapsed shortly after bidding farewell to President Bola Tinubu and other dignitaries at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
The incident, unfolding as guests were leaving the Congress Hall, saw Akpabio suddenly slump to the ground. Sources report that he was briefly stabilized on-site before being rushed to the NNPC hospital in Abuja, where he is currently receiving medical attention in a special room. The precise nature and severity of his condition remain unclear, fueling anxieties among Nigerians and the political sphere.
The sudden turn of events left witnesses shaken. Akpabio’s collapse occurred just moments after President Tinubu, who had graced the occasion with his presence, expressed optimism about the collaborative efforts between the executive and legislative arms of government in tackling Nigeria’s challenges. “Having Senate President Akpabio and Speaker Abbas on my side is enough for me to succeed, and we will succeed,” stated President Tinubu, according to Chief Ajuri Ngelale, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity.
However, the joyous mood of the celebration was swiftly replaced by concern for Akpabio’s health. As the Senate President, his well-being is a matter of national importance, and his absence from the helm of the legislative arm would create a significant void.
Sahara Reporters, who broke the news of Akpabio’s collapse, further reported that he is currently undergoing intensive medical care. While official communication from the family or the Senate remains awaited, the uncertainty surrounding his condition has sparked widespread anxiety and well wishes from across the country.
