The Story of Mary Letourneau: The Teacher Who Became Pregnant by Her Student, Served Jail Time, and Then Married Him, Having Two Children.
The story of Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau remains one of the most controversial and captivating narratives of modern times, blurring the lines between crime, trauma, and enduring connection. It’s a saga that began with an abuse of trust and evolved into a complex relationship that lasted over two decades, ending only with Letourneau’s death.
In 1997, the public was shocked by the arrest of Letourneau, a 34-year-old married teacher and mother from Washington state. The charge was the statutory rape of her 12-year-old sixth-grade student, Vili Fualaau. The case exploded into a media frenzy, painting a grim picture of a predator and her victim.
The legal consequences were severe. Letourneau was convicted and sentenced to prison. During the legal proceedings and her subsequent time behind bars, she gave birth to two daughters fathered by Fualaau. After serving more than seven years in prison, she was released in 2004.

In a turn of events that continued to confound the public, Letourneau and Fualaau married in 2005, just after he turned 21. Their wedding, held amid intense media scrutiny, seemed to cement a bond that had survived courtrooms and prison sentences. For a time, they attempted to build a life together away from the headlines, raising their two children.
Unfortunately, the couple announced their separation in 2017 and their marriage was formally dissolved in 2019. The weight of a relationship born in scandal and trauma, it seemed, was a challenge even for them to sustain.

The story, however, did not end with divorce. In 2020, Mary Kay Letourneau was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. In her final months, Vili Fualaau, the boy she had once taught and the man she had married, returned to her side as her primary caregiver.
He remained with her throughout her treatment, providing comfort and support until she passed away in July 2020 at the age of 58. Fualaau later shared her final moments, revealing, “The last thing she told me is that I am the most important person to her and that everything is going to be okay.”

The story of Letourneau and Fualaau resists a simple moral. It is, first and foremost, a story of a grave crime and the exploitation of a child. Yet, the subsequent decades—the marriage, the family, and ultimately, Fualaau’s devoted care during her illness— gave the story a twist, love is beautiful and natural, it’s so powerful that we have no power to choose who we fall in love with.
It’s so wrong, but then so right at the same time.
