President Bola Tinubu has expressed his delight at the Super Falcons’ spectacular victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), stating that he eagerly looks forward to receiving the trophy in Abuja.

“I am very, very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You have lifted our spirits. You are a pride to your generation, and we are all very happy,” the President said.
He commended the players, coaches, and officials, including the ministers, for their dedication and hard work. “You will be celebrated, and I congratulate all the coaches and management of the team, including the ministers and the officials,” he added.
President Tinubu singled out Rasheedat Ajibade, who emerged as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Woman of the Tournament, for special recognition. He also lauded Esther Okoronkwo for her composure during a crucial moment in the final, describing her 64th-minute penalty kick—which sparked Nigeria’s dramatic comeback—as “very courageous.
Okoronkwo played a pivotal role in the final, assisting the second goal and delivering the decisive free-kick that Jennifer Echegini converted to seal Nigeria’s thrilling 3-2 victory.

As the players prepared to return to Nigeria, the President wished them a safe journey, urging them to enjoy their triumph while staying injury-free. “Safe journey home, enjoy yourselves, avoid injuries, God bless you,” he said.
The players, in high spirits, repeatedly interrupted with cheers of “Thank you, Mr. President!”
Responding on behalf of the team, Ajibade thanked President Tinubu for approving the full payment of players’ allowances—a gesture that further motivated the squad. She assured him that the team was eager to present him with the WAFCON trophy upon their return to Abuja.
The lively exchange concluded with a rousing rendition of the Nigerian national anthem and three thunderous “Gbosa!” cheers for the President, symbolizing the unity and pride the Super Falcons have brought to the nation.
