In a heartbreaking incident, 19-year-old Opesusi Faith Timilehin from Ikorodu, Lagos State, has died by suicide after scoring 190 in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The young student, described by family and neighbors as calm, respectful, and academically driven, had high hopes of studying Microbiology but was devastated by her result, which she believed was lower than her previous year’s score.

Faith had taken the JAMB exam in 2024 and was determined to improve her score this year. However, when she checked her 2025 UTME result and saw 190—a mark she feared would deny her admission—she fell into deep despair. Tragically, just 30 minutes after her death, a provisional admission notification from JAMB arrived in her email inbox, adding a cruel twist to the already devastating situation.
Faith’s death has brought renewed attention to the alarming failure rate in this year’s JAMB exams. Reports indicate that over 70% of candidates scored below 200, with many students and parents expressing frustration over the unusually tough grading system. The widespread poor performance has led to accusations that the examination body may have set unrealistic standards or encountered technical errors in scoring.
