
Tragedy in Anambra: 10-Year-Old Boy Accidentally Shoots, Kills Police Inspector Father
A heartbreaking incident in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, has left a family in mourning after a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his father, Police Inspector Okolie Amechi, with the officer’s service AK-47 rifle.
The tragic event, which occurred on the evening of June 15, 2025, unfolded when the young boy was handling the firearm, unaware of its loaded state. In a moment of devastating misfortune, he accidentally pulled the trigger, firing a bullet that struck his father in the back. The same bullet also hit the officer’s second son in the hand, leaving him injured.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident in a press statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga. According to Ikenga, Inspector Amechi was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead by the attending physician. His second son, however, is responding well to treatment.
“The Command expresses deep sadness over this unfortunate incident,” Ikenga stated. “The rifle has been recovered, and the remains of the late Inspector have been deposited in the morgue.”

The police spokesman extended condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public that further updates would be provided as necessary. The incident has raised concerns about firearm safety, particularly in homes where law enforcement officers reside with their families.
