4 Nigerian Head of States You Thought Were Hausa But Are From Different Tribes.
Many Nigerians say that Hausas have been ruling this country since 1960 when we got independent, but they do not know that most of the past Nigerian Presidents are not Hausa or Fulani at all.
Let’s see these 4 Past Nigerian Leaders that are not Hausa or Fulani.
1. Gen. Ibrahim Babangida
He is not from the Hausa region, although he hails from Niger State. He was elected as the head of state from 1985 to 1993. He contributed a lot to the economic development of our Nation, Nigeria. He moved Federal Capital Territory from Dodan Barracks Lagos to Aso Rock Villa Abuja in the year 1991 and he also built the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos which was the largest Bridge in Africa at the time of completion.
Ibrahim Babangida hails from Gwari in Niger State, and his tribe is Nupe.

2. General Sani Abacha
Abacha was born in September 1943, He was a Nigerian Military General who was elected as the Military Head of the State of Nigeria from 1993 until his death in year 1998. He was also crowned the Chief of Defence Staff between the years 1990 to 1993 and Minister of Defence in 1993. Sani Abacha became the first Army officer in Nigeria to attain the rank of full military General without skipping a single Rank.

Sani Abacha hails from Kanuri Tribe in Borno, but he was born and brought up in Kano.
3. General Yakubu Gowon
He’s a Nigerian Military and Political leader. He was elected as Nigerian President in the year 1966. He was the third Head of State of Nigeria at that time.
Gowon was born on the 19th of October 1934 in Pankshin, Nigeria. His family lived in a small village near Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State.
General Yakubu Gowon hails from Angas in Plateau State.

4. Tafawa Balewa
Belewa was the first Nigerian Prime Minister. Balewa was born in December 1902 in Bauchi State, in the Northern Nigeria Protectorate.
He hails from a tribe called Gere in Bauchi State, known in the singular form as Bagere.
You can now see that these presidents are not Hausa, is just like the way we have Igbos in Rivers, Delta state, and many other ethnic groups in those same two states. That’s how the Northern region has many tribes that are not Hausa or Fulani.
