Soldiers from the 144 Battalion posted at Ariaria junction on the Enugu- Port Harcourt expressway killed 11 gunmen in a fierce gun battle on Wednesday.

This comes just 48 hours after three police officers were ambushed and killed by hoodlums in Abiriba, in the state’ s Ohafia council district.

The soldiers laid ambush at their checkpoint at the Ariaria junction waiting for the group of around 50 gunmen.

According to sources, the soldiers had gathered intelligence and laid in wait for the gunmen before they arrived in the city.

The gunmen opened fire as soon as they arrived, but the soldiers retaliated.

The subsequent gun battle, which is said to have lasted more than 30 minutes, claimed the lives of 11 people as they bowed to the soldiers’ superior firepower. Other gang members are said to have escaped with gunshot wounds.

However, there are contradictory reports about the number of casualties; while some sources say that 16 people were killed, including a soldier, a top military source in Aba says that only 11 gunmen were killed and that the army suffered no casualties.

” We didn’ t kill any soldiers, but we did kill 11 gunmen. He said, ” I assure the public that there were no casualties among the soldiers. “

In response to the incident, the Abia State government praised the soldiers for their bravery, emphasizing that it is committed to protecting the lives and property of the state’ s people.

Chief John Okiyi Kalu, the state’ s Commissioner for Information, cautioned youths not to put themselves in danger by attacking security agents under any guise.

” This is a positive development; we welcome any and all measures that are appropriate to protect the good citizens of Abia State. We urge our young people to avoid putting themselves in danger by targeting security agents in any guise. We also implore them not to allow themselves to be exploited by politicians to foment insecurity for some excuse. The government of Abia State will do everything possible to ensure that law- abiding citizens are safe. “
