Military coup underway as Army in Gabon take control of the State radio, Libreville call the creation of a council to restore democracy adding that they question President Bongo’s ability to continue. Bongo has been out of the country since October and is recovering from illness in Morocco.
According to reports the Gabonese government was able to repel coup attempt.
At 4.30am (0530 GMT) on Monday a man identifying himself as Lt Kelly Ondo Obiang read out a message on state radio that was simultaneously filmed for social media.
Obiang was flanked by two armed men, all in the uniform and green berets of the powerful Republican Guard, which is usually tasked with protecting the president.
