Like the man putting up a “No Smoking” sign while a slowly burning stick of cigarette is trapped between his lips? There are too many things I cannot understand about my country. They look so simple, so commonsensical and so doable — like plucking low-hanging fruits — that they shouldn’t elicit any argument or foot-dragging. Yet, for decades on end, government after government, president after president and governors after governors keep going in circles. They will proclaim one thing as policy and do everything possible to undermine it. Is it an IQ problem? Or wickedness? Or blindness? Or plain incompetence? I will highlight just 10 of these unbelievable things today. Heartbreaking!

I am onye Anambra, and today, I write not as a person with partisan interest, but as a concerned citizen, or what our people call “nwa afo”. I write as a citizen with civic consciousness who understands that more often than not, especially in the Nigerian political space, electioneering activities tend to obscure the real issues affecting the society. Those issues get glossed over without critical appraisal and are lost in the din of campaign activities. And so elections come and go, but those issues still remain because like Newton’s first law of motion states, an object will remain at rest or move in a constant velocity until it is acted upon by an external force.

22 years after, the Supreme Court freed Mr. Alban Ajaegbu, who was one of the accused persons in the celebrated ‘Otokoto’ ritual murder of 11-year-old Ikechukuwu Okoronkwo. Little Okonkwo who was a groundnut seller, was on September 19, 1996, lured into a hotel called Otokoto in Owerri, Imo State and gruesomely beheaded. Investigations had revealed that the victim became unconscious at the hotel after he drank a bottle of Coca-Cola that was spiked with drug, before he was killed.
