The 2024 Grammy Awards saw a historic moment for African music with the inauguration of “Best African Music Performance” category. While many Nigerian fans had their hopes set on Davido taking home the award with his hit “Unavailable,” it was 22-year-old South African artist Tyla who emerged victorious with her song “Water.”
Davido, who garnered three nominations this year, undoubtedly had a large portion of the spotlight. However, the night belonged to Tyla, who not only became the first recipient of the new award but also made history as the youngest and first South African to win in this category. Her triumph was met with mixed reactions, with some Nigerian fans expressing disappointment for Davido while others celebrated the broader win for African music.

Despite not winning himself, Davido displayed true sportsmanship by congratulating Tyla on his social media platform, stating, “Congratulations on your win @Tyllaaaaaaa! Big One for africa! Keep soaring!”. This act of grace resonated with many, highlighting the supportive spirit within the African music community.
While “Unavailable” undoubtedly enjoyed massive success, the Grammys recognized “Water” as the stronger contender.
Burna Boy, another Grammy-nominated Nigerian artist, also did not receive an award this year.
Looking forward, Davido’s dedication and work ethic are undeniable. His fans remain hopeful that his Grammy win is just around the corner.
