There have been a number of top people who have been murdered in Nigeria, but the death of the wife of the former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo who was murdered on Valentine’s day in 1987 is unforgettable.

About three miles away from the incident, the perpetrators abandoned the Peugeot car.
The robbers appeared to have been following Mrs. Linda Obasanjo as police probed the incident, which was thought to be a planned murder. They agreed to look into the murder further.

When Obasanjo learned of her death, he was visiting his property in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Obasanjo was a former army commander who served as the president of Nigeria from 1976 until 1979.
During the 1967-1970 Biafra conflict, Obasanjo headed the government’s primary striking unit as commander of the 3rd Marine Commando Division. After Murtala Muhammed was murdered in 1976, he served as supreme military commander before becoming president.
It is rather unfortunate that the wives of politicians are not so safe in the country as Obasanjo has not been the only person who has lost his wife to such gruesome death.

Another person is Kudirat Abiola, the wife of MKO Abiola who was attacked by unknown gunmen, allegedly on the orders of the military government of the late Gen. Sani Abacha. According to the reports, her murder was carried out by six men and not only she died, but her driver also died.
Weirdly, her personal assistant left the scene unhurt. The gunmen obviously had their targets as it was gathered that the bullet lodged in her forehead and smashed her brain.
When this happened, she was rushed to the hospital but she still died with a gaping bullet wound on her forehead.
During the investigation, the weapon used to kill her was allegedly traced to the personal armory of Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former chief security officer to the late dictator, General Sani Abacha.
One of the killers was arrested and at trial, the self-confessed killer, Sergeant Barnabas Jabila, said he was obeying orders from his superior, al-Mustapha.
He stated that each member of the killer team was reportedly given the sum of N50,000 ($250) then by Major Al-Mustapha for a job well done.
At first, Al Mustapha was sentenced to death by hanging but he appealed and was acquitted. Eventually, none of the killers of Kudirat Abiola was punished.
There is a lot of evil and injustice going on to even the rich and powerful people in Nigeria.
Despite the pain, the Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo has still risen to become one of the most influential men in the country.
