Parents of the five pupils and four teachers abducted from the Apostolic Faith Group of Schools in Emure-Ekiti have spoken out about their harrowing ordeal, revealing unusual ransom demands and a tense negotiation process.

The group was kidnapped on January 29th while returning home from school and held captive for several days. Their abductors initially demanded a staggering N100 million, eventually settling for N15 million after negotiations. However, the ordeal didn’t end there.

One parent, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the kidnappers’ demands as bizarre. In addition to the N15 million, they requested a peculiar mix of items: fried rice with chicken, tinned milk, black bullet drinks, other energy drinks, and even the painkiller Tramadol.

Following these demands, the families were instructed to deliver the ransom and supplies to a remote location in Ondo State at night. This involved walking through unfamiliar terrain on foot to deliver the items.

Another parent recounted the kidnappers’ shifting instructions which was confusing. They were initially directed to Ikare Junction, far from the abduction site, before being rerouted to a secluded bush path accessible only by large vehicles.

Understandably concerned about the victims’ safety, the parents took precautions. They limited the number of people involved in the exchange, fearing the presence of police could provoke the kidnappers.

Despite the ordeal, the release of the children and teachers brought immense relief. The families acknowledged the support received from the community, Governor Oyebanji, and President Tinubu.

While the authorities confirmed the victims’ release, the police spokesman did not speak about the ransom payment.
