Ethiopian Unrest: UN Injects $40 Million to Save Life as Bloody War Continues to Destroy and Divide.
UN announced recently that it had released a staggering 40 million dollars as an emergency injection aimed at alleviating the deteriorating humanitarian situation following the yearlong fighting that has consumed the north of the country.
The announcement that was made by the UN Aid Chief, Martin Griffiths on Monday was construed as an effort to scale up humanitarian efforts in the conflict- ridden region and address what is undoubtedly a deteriorating humanitarian situation.

The funding was also released, according to a news piece written by Al Jazeera news on the subject, as an early response to drought in the south. It indeed appears that the needs of the people in the nation are increasing and that the UN is ramping up efforts to address the growing humanitarian crises wherever in Ethiopia they will arise.
Of the 40 million dollars that was reportedly released, about 25 million of it was from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund while the other 15 million dollars was from the nation- based Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund.
This fresh wave of aid, it is hoped will enable the UN and other humanitarian actors in the region respond as comprehensively and effectively as they can to the escalating conflict and deteriorating humanitarian situation.
Intention of the Financing
The money disbursed will serve a variety of purposes in the different regions presently bearing the brunt of the fighting. In the region of Tigray, Ahmara and Afar the aid will provide life- saving support to those presently bearing the brunt of the fighting.

In the drought- hit regions of Somali and Oromia, the additional funding will be targeted towards provisioning of clean water for human consumption, preservation of livestock and checking the spread of waterborne diseases.
Shortfall Still Exists
The UN, now more than ever seems cognizant of the reality of the unfolding humanitarian disaster brewing in Ethiopia. In his statement, Griffiths spoke to the plight of the Ethiopian people, describing them as living on a ” knife- edge. “
” Across the country, needs are rising, ” he said.
And yet, despite what seems to be a massive investment in emergency humanitarian endeavors, the humanitarian efforts still face a staggering financial shortfall, especially in light of the escalating violence and its implication in the conflict zone.
The UN said that its humanitarian efforts in Ethiopia are still having to contend with a shocking 1. 3 billion dollar funding gap with a whopping 350 million dollars needed in the form of relief response for Tigray alone.
What this means is that even while the efforts of the UN grow, there still exist financial bottlenecks that limit the extent of the humanitarian effort.
Escalating Conflict
The new injection of funding by the UN comes at a time when, rather that slowing down, the conflict in the region seems to be rapidly escalating. Last month, the government launched a fresh wave of aerial bombardment in the Tigray region.
The numerous number of such bombardments were heavily criticized by the TPLF who accused the government of targeting and harming civilians, an accusation the government denied.
The civil conflict was sparked in November 2020 when the federal government under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed accused the TPLF of orchestrating an attack against a military establishment. The accusation was then followed by his sending troops into the Tigray region.
While the government invasion showed success in its initial stages, the fighting took a twist mid- year when the TPLF regained control of the regional capital Mekelle. Since then, the fighting has spread to the neighboring regions of Ahmara and Afar.
Fighting has since escalated with the TPLF threatening to march to the capital Addis Ababa. On November 5, Reuters news reported that the TPLF had come within a day’ s drive from the nation’ s capital.
However, there remains much skepticism about the actual possibility of this occurring or even about the success of it should the TPLF attempt it.
