Exclusive: Survivor Details Kwara Attack, Says Those Who Surrendered Were Executed.
A detailed and chilling account has emerged from the ruins of Tuesday’s violent attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State. The brother of the Woro traditional ruler, speaking on Wednesday, described a coordinated assault that left residents with nowhere to run and, for many who surrendered, no chance to live.
According to Umar, the younger brother of the community’s leader, the attackers arrived on motorcycles in the early evening and spread out across the neighbourhoods. Their positioning, he said, was deliberate and cut off any hope of escape.
“The way they came in, it was like a net closing,” Umar told the News Agency of Nigeria. “Gunshots were coming from every side. If you tried to run, they cut you down. There was no way out.”
The horror, however, did not end there. Umar stated that the assailants then rounded up those who had surrendered or were caught, taking them to the palace of the village head.

“The residents who attempted to flee were shot,” he said, “while those who surrendered were gathered at the palace, where they were tied up and shot.”

The attack has also left a deep wound at the heart of the community’s leadership. Umar confirmed that the traditional ruler’s mother, his wife, and three of his children were taken away by the gunmen. Five members of the extended family remain missing.
The aftermath has left the towns shell-shocked and empty. Most residents fled into the surrounding bush, and fear now prevents them from returning. Umar stressed that restoring a sense of safety is the most immediate challenge.
“The town is like a ghost place,” he said. “We need more security forces here, not just for a day, but to stay. People need to see them, to feel safe enough to come back to their homes.”
A troubling aspect of the account involves prior warnings. Umar revealed that intelligence about a possible attack had been received and passed from local authorities to higher security commands. Furthermore, a military patrol had been active in the area earlier on Tuesday, which initially seemed to keep the attackers at bay before they eventually struck.

Local officials and state police authorities are expected to give an official statement on the incident and the ongoing search and rescue efforts later today. The communities of Woro and Nuku now wait, hoping for the return of their loved ones and for a security solution that will let them rebuild.
