Meanwhile, further reports say It became very easy for the bandits as it was discovered that officers who were manning and protecting the institution’s Closed Circuit Television cameras, CCTV, slept off on dirty and could not raise the alarm when the bandits stormed the academy.
To this end, military authorities have reportedly started compiling the names of errant personnel to be court-martialed.
Identities Of The Victims Of The Attack
Sadly, the bandits reportedly shot dead two officers identified as Lieutenant Commodore Wulah and Flight Lieutenant CM Okoronwo, and also abducted Major Datong, while 2nd Lieutenant Onah sustained gunshot injuries.
A reliable source within the barracks cited by SaharaReporters said:
” It was a terrible experience; the bandits took advantage of the time when most people had gone to bed to attack the barracks. “
” Right now, the whole barracks is under lock and key and security has been beefed up so that the bandits cannot leave the barracks because it is believed that they are still within. “
What A Senior Military Officer Said About The Attack
A top military officer, cited by The PUNCH, said: ” In a Gestapo style, gunmen in military camouflage invaded the NDA, gunning down two officers, a naval officer and an Air Force officer, after gaining access to the well-fortified institution.
” The gunmen came in large numbers. They were fully kitted in military camouflage and forced their way into the academy before proceeding to the officers’ quarters. Their targets were probably the cadets (students). “
Sources Blame The Attack On The Sleeping Security Guards
A source cited by The PUNCH said: ” Preliminary findings revealed that the security guards were either asleep or not on duty during the attack. Further investigation will show what aided the attack; whether it was insiders’ connivance, negligence or dereliction of duty by the guards or other extraneous factors or circumstances. “
What The NDA Said After The Attack
In a statement titled, ‘ Security breach of the Nigerian Defence Academy architecture’ , The NDA spokesman Jagira said:
” The security architecture of the Nigerian Defence Academy was compromised early this morning (Tuesday) by unknown gunmen, who gained access into the residential area within the academy in Afaka. During the unfortunate incident, we lost two personnel and one was abducted.
” The academy, in collaboration with the 1 Division, Nigerian Army, and the Air Training Command as well as other security agencies in Kaduna State, has since commenced the pursuit of the unknown gunmen within the general area with a view to tracking them and rescuing the abducted personnel.
” The NDA community and the cadets are safe in the academy. We assure the general public that these unknown gunmen will soon be apprehended and the abducted personnel rescued. “
The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Reacts
The ACF, through its National Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Yawe, condemned the attack, noting that it is terrible.
” It’ s a terrible development. It underscores our parlous state of security in Nigeria and the uncountable calls by the ACF and others for something to be done by the government to improve our collective security.
” The latest security breach is another embarrassment to the ACF. The NDA is a proud monument of the efforts of the first generation of northerners, who fought hard to bring development to the North; the likes of Muhammadu Ribadu, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Sir Ahmadu Bello, who brought the institution to Kaduna. They did not bring it here for our generation to hand it over to bandits or whatever we call them. “
Nigerians React
@Adams Splemdor said, ” Rubbish!
The military is being destroyed and balkanized from within. Trying to make a collabo look like a mistake. When you guys are done destroying the foundation of Nigeria, we will go our separate ways. It’ s either Nigeria is thoroughly restructured now or soon there will be no Nigeria. Those is governance today have initiated the irreversible process of the disintegration of Nigeria and history will remember this govt for that, the cheapest way to avoid that is urgent clinical restructuring.
@Bulus Dauda said, ” Medicine after dead. Nigeria my father’ s land. Poor and less rank personal will sofar this. In a just country the NDA Commandant is the big failure and not his soldier. Security guards kinni. So they don’ t have cameras that see s far as a mile or two miles away. By the way are they not trained in physical combat? Maybe I watch too much foreign film. As in I don’ t get, no guns? , No tear gas, wat about those weapons used on innocent citizens during protests and all. “
@Elijah Taiwao said, ” No attack and defend formation? Was nda able to shoot any of the bandits or arrest some? So they came in, they injured, kidnapped and killed. Well if you ask me, I think these bandits are known. Anyways what did I know, someone said not all bandits are terrorists. God save Nigeria.”
Nigerian Politicians React To The Attack
Femi Fani Kayode, FFK, Nigerian former minister of aviation reacted to the tragic attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna State, by bandits.
” The attack on the Nigerian Defence Academy by terrorists in which an Army officer was killed & 2 Majors were kidnapped is a big insult & slap on the face of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The terrorists must be hunted & killed & the 2 Majors must be rescued quickly & expeditiously. “
Reno Omokri, Nigerian politician and lawyer also reacted on Twitter saying:
