The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, has asked the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to rethink the decision to restrict movement during Saturday’s local government elections.

In a statement released by her media aide, Matilda Duncan, Senator Kingibe criticized the curfew, calling it a decision made without proper discussion with those it affects. She described the move as one that does not fit with the way things should be done in a democracy.

The Senator argued that ordering people to stay indoors across the whole territory goes against the rights of residents. She also pointed to complaints from citizens who found it difficult to get to their polling units because of the lockdown. Many of these voters, she noted, had moved homes but were unable to update their voter cards in time to vote at a new location, meaning they had to travel back to their old neighborhoods to cast their ballots.

Others have also raised questions about the need for the curfew. Some economists have noted that shutting down a city for a day costs a lot of money in lost business and wages. On the other hand, security experts have given their support to the idea, saying it helps police and other security forces keep watch and stop people from being moved around in groups to sell their votes. They believe the curfew makes it harder for politicians to cheat by busing voters from one place to another.

The situation has left residents divided between those who feel the lockdown is too heavy-handed and those who see it as a necessary step for a fair election.
