Northern Islamic Clerics Visit Iranian Embassy in Abuja to Mourn Khamenei.
A delegation of Islamic scholars and community figures from Northern Nigeria paid a condolence visit to the Iranian Embassy in Abuja following reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
The visit, which took place shortly after the news broke on February 28, 2026, was meant to express sympathy with the government and people of Iran during their period of loss.

Among those who visited the embassy was Maulana Sheikh Prof. Ibrahim Maqari, along with other members of his team. They were received by the Iranian Ambassador, Majid Saffar. Those present at the meeting said the visit was a way to show unity with the Iranian people and to acknowledge the late leader’s role as a key religious and political figure in the wider Muslim community.

In a separate reaction, a well-known northern cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, took to social media to share his thoughts. He referred to the late leader as a “lucky soul” and commented that he had “died in jihad.” His remarks also touched on the circumstances of Khamenei’s death, which Iranian officials have attributed to joint airstrikes by the United States and Israel. Gumi used his platform to call for justice following the event.

The news of the leader’s death has also stirred reactions on the streets. In cities like Sokoto, Niger, and Kano, there were gatherings of protesters. Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), a group led by Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, were seen in processions. They carried Iranian flags and held up portraits of the late leader, chanting in solidarity.

These demonstrations in Nigeria align with the official mourning period declared in Iran itself. Following confirmation of Khamenei’s death, the Iranian government announced a 40-day period of national mourning. The political situation in Iran moved quickly afterward. On March 8, 2026, the country’s Assembly of Experts appointed Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late leader, to take over the role of Supreme Leader.
