In anticipation of the 2023 Yuletide season, the Federal Government has unveiled initiatives to ease the financial strain of inter-state travel.
Chairman of the Inter-ministerial Committee on Presidential Intervention and Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, announced that President Bola Tinubu has authorized a 50% discount on inter-state land transportation fares across 28 luxury bus routes nationwide from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024. Additionally, President Tinubu approved free train rides along the Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kaduna, and Warri-Itakpe corridors within the same period.
Mr. Alake emphasized that all necessary arrangements for the program’s implementation have been coordinated between the Ministry of Transportation and transport unions and luxurious bus owners.
He urged Nigerians to take advantage of the special discounted fares, emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing relief during the holiday season.
The Minister for Transportation, Saedu Alkali, clarified that the involvement of luxury bus unions was due to their well-organized structures across the country.
He explained that the 50% reduction in road transport fares was a strategic measure, considering both the security situation and the need to prevent misuse of free transportation.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, assured Nigerians that this intervention was not a one-time effort and that President Tinubu would continue to assess situations during national holidays, considering further interventions as needed.
The 28 luxury bus routes covered by the initiative include popular ones such as Lagos-Kano, Lagos-Abuja, Lagos-Enugu, and others, with participating companies like GIG (God is Good), Chisco Transport, Young Shall Grow, God Bless Ezenwata, and Area Motor.
