Gov Yahaya Bello Sends Strong Warning To Sheikh Gumi.
Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has asked prominent Islamic scholar Ahmad Abubakar Gumi to stop comparing Niger Delta militants to armed bandits, according to reports.
Recall Gumi claimed that bandits learned kidnapping from militants in the Niger Delta, specifically the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta? (MEND). And, like MEND, the federal government should grant them amnesty, but governor Yahaha Bello wasn’t satisfied with Sheikh’s words, and he gave him a piece of his mind.
Sheikh Gumi claims that ” herdsmen were bandits and taught some of their current activities to be able to protect themselves when they became victims of cattle rustling. “
This comes just days after an Islamic cleric who typically negotiates for the release of kidnapped victims by bandits said that bandits learned to kidnap from Niger Delta militants and added, ” If the government can offer amnesty to Niger Delta militants, then it should be able to give amnesty to bandits as well. “
The comments of the Islamic cleric Sheikh Gumi did not sit well with Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, who countered the cleric’s statements and made it clear that what the cleric said should be considered a hoax. He also urged the Nigerian army to engage all bandits in our forest and drive them out.
Banditry and abduction should not be tolerated in our country, and Sheikh Gumi’s support for these criminals would only allow them to continue their crimes against our country. Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered our military operatives to shoot anyone caught illegally carrying an AK- 47 on sight, and these robbers, as Sheikh Gumi represents them, are no exception.
What are your thoughts on Governor Yahaha Bello’ s comments? Do you believe the Sheikh is going too far in defending these bandits?
