“If This Is a Foretaste of 2027, Then We Are in Trouble” – Writer Laments Over Low Voter Turnout in FCT Election.
A Facebook commentator and media personality, Ikechukwu Somemore Nnochiri, has shared his thoughts on the just concluded FCT Area Council Election 2026. Many have said the turnout was low, with some polling units recording just one vote, and his experience confirmed this.
At various polling units I visited today, INEC’s ad hoc staff members were either idle or just pressing their phones. There was a high level of voter apathy. Most Abuja residents chose to spend their time indoors, while boys remembered their long-lost football skills.

The streets were not totally deserted. Despite the restrictions on vehicular movement, some stubborn taxi drivers dared the odds and came out. I wonder how they were able to beat the various security roadblocks, even though the security agents were more interested in what could enter their pockets.
The police officers who stopped me around Garki, Area 10, just before the Ship House, were, however, very civil. Even without INEC’s tag, I simply identified myself, and they waved me on. I didn’t face any challenge until I got to the CSO Situation Room at Abuja Continental Hotel (formerly known as Sheraton Hotel).
But what caught my attention most was the lack of interest from voters. At a time when we should be building the habit of electing our leaders from the grassroots, it seems many people do not care anymore. This is worrying because local government elections are meant to be the closest to the people.
If the voter disinterest I witnessed today is a foretaste of the 2027 general elections, then we are in trouble as a nation.
