Jabi Lake Mall Set to Become Nigeria’s Top Marine Tourism Spot as Roberts Meets with Senator Ned Nwoko, Other Investors.
A new partnership could change the face of tourism in Nigeria’s capital. Tourism Ambassador Phil Roberts has held talks with Senator Ned Nwoko, with plans centered on turning Abuja’s Jabi Lake into the country’s flagship destination for marine tourism and sustainable development.
The two men met recently at Senator Nwoko’s home in Abuja’s Maitama district. Their discussion focused on how to boost tourism, take action on climate issues, protect the environment, and promote growth that benefits both the economy and the ecosystem.

Speaking after the meeting, Ambassador Roberts pointed to Senator Nwoko’s own record as a sign of shared goals. Nwoko is known for being the first Black African to travel to Antarctica on an environmental expedition.
“Senator Ned Nwoko’s trip to Antarctica shows a commitment to the planet that speaks for Africa,” Roberts told reporters. “His drive for conservation and building tourism fits exactly with what we want to do—to put Nigeria on the map as a top choice for visitors.”

Roberts explained that starting from this year 2026, his work on sustainable tourism and climate action will expand through a partnership with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Change and Technology.

The collaboration will focus on several key areas:
- Developing eco-friendly tourism projects.
- Supporting projects that help fight and adapt to climate change.
- Promoting marine tourism and the “blue economy” around water resources.
- Running education and conservation programs for the environment.
These efforts are designed to support both Nigeria’s development plans and global United Nations sustainability goals.
The most visible part of this plan is a major project for Jabi Lake in Abuja. The vision is to develop the lake and its surroundings into a first-class center for marine tourism. This would include unique tourist experiences, spaces for innovation and research, environmental projects, and events that support the creative industries—all while ensuring the lake is used responsibly.

The partnership also aims to weave climate awareness into popular culture. For example, the planned Rock Music Festival for 2026 is expected to carry a strong theme of sustainability and environmental action.
Ambassador Roberts ended his comments with a call for more support, inviting other investors and donor groups to join the effort and help make the ambitious vision for Jabi Lake a reality.
