The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, was recently detained at Heathrow Airport, London in the United Kingdom over mistaken identity. The situation has generated a lot of reactions from the international community, including the British Government.
In its statement regarding the situation, the British Government apologized to the presidential candidate who came third during the recently concluded presidential election in Nigeria and described his detention for hours at the airport as unacceptable.
” Frankly, the immigration Official’ s action- has been appalling- and we are sorry, ” the immigration authorities apologized.
It should be noted that the Labour Party through the Head of Obi- Datti Media Office, Diran Onifade, on Wednesday confirmed that the presidential candidate was detained for hours at the Airport, stressing that he was released following the reaction of Nigerians at Heathrow Airport.
The statement reads in part: ” The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi just back from London, United Kingdom where he celebrated Easter, has confirmed that he was harassed by London immigration officials and placed in detention but for the spontaneous reaction of Nigerians at Heathrow Airport.
Meanwhile, the Igbo socio- political organization, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has reacted to the situation, stating that all efforts to pull Obi down, because he decided to pursue his stolen mandate will not succeed.
According to reports the Igbo elders condemned the situation stressing that it was meant to embarrass Obi, a former Anambra State Governor.
“It is very unfortunate for this who want to embarrass Obi, however, it was good it happened. After this, there will not be such a thing again anywhere in the world as they have been exposed. The have exposed their plots to the whole world, but whoever is behind is is wasting time and energy the group said.”
“It is very clear to the world that the man is a man of integrity and law-abiding, who had been pursuing his mandate legally. So any ploy to rope him and embarrass him will continue to fail. They are being exposed, Ohanaeze said.
