Man Arrested for Allegedly Beating Girlfriend to Death in Abia.
Umuahia, Abia State – The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a man accused of beating his girlfriend to death. The incident has sent shockwaves through the quiet community of Okagwe in Ohafia Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Mr. Edward Okorie, a native of Isiugwu, Ohafia, is alleged to have killed his girlfriend, Miss Sophy Chika. Miss Chika, a nurse by profession, hailed from Ozu Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area. Reports say the couple had been living together for more than three years.
According to information gathered from community sources, the tragedy unfolded on Monday, February 23, 2026. What started as a minor misunderstanding between the couple in the early hours of the morning quickly got out of hand. Sources say the disagreement escalated verbally before turning physical, during which the suspect allegedly beat the nurse. She later died from her injuries.
A source close to the community, who spoke to our correspondent, expressed disbelief over the incident. “The tragedy struck yesterday, at Isiugwu Ohafia,” the source said. “Mr. Edward Okorie killed his girlfriend over a minor misunderstanding that happened between them. They were lovers who have been living together for over three years now. They had a misunderstanding in the early hours of yesterday and she was reportedly beaten to death.”
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the arrest. She stated that she was briefed on the matter by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the Ohafia area.
DSP Chinaka confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody. She added that to ensure a transparent and detailed investigation, the case file has been transferred from the Ohafia division to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) located in Umuahia, the state capital. Police authorities have assured that the investigation is ongoing and the suspect will face the full weight of the law.
