Footage of a fiery object streaking across the sky went viral on social media on June 18, with many initially mistaking it for a meteor. However, it was later confirmed to be Iran’s Fattah missile—a hypersonic ballistic weapon first unveiled in 2023. Unlike traditional missiles, the Fattah is guided, uses solid fuel, and can operate both within and outside Earth’s atmosphere, making it far more difficult to intercept.
Defense experts warn that the missile’s blistering speed and ability to change trajectory mid-flight render current anti-missile systems, such as Israel’s Iron Dome, nearly ineffective against it. This launch signifies Iran’s entry into an elite group of nations—including Russia and China—with operational hypersonic missile capabilities.
